What Is a Hardwood Floor Recoat?

A Recoat is a maintenance process performed on the existing hardwood floor finish. The surface is professionally cleaned and prepared to create the proper conditions for adhesion, followed by the application of a new protective finish coat.

Unlike complete refinishing, the hardwood floor is not sanded down to bare wood. The purpose is to maintain and renew the existing finish when the condition of the floor allows it.

A Recoat Is Not the Same as Refinishing

Recoat renews the protective surface of a hardwood floor, but it does not remove damage that extends through the existing finish and into the wood itself.

Deep Scratches

Scratches that penetrate through the finish and into the wood generally cannot be removed with a Recoat alone.

Wood Stains & Damage

Dark stains, water damage, exposed wood, and significant deterioration may require repair or complete refinishing.

Changing Floor Color

A Recoat is not intended to change the stain color of the hardwood floor. Color changes generally require sanding and refinishing.
